History
By 2010, the Apple TV was still very much a "hobby." But, Apple nonetheless observed that its customers were renting programming rather than buying it outright. Thus, the diminutive second-generation "stream box" was born. This palm-sized powerhouse packs an A4 chip and runs a variant of Apple's iOS software, complete with front-end access to iTunes, YouTube, Flickr, Netflix, and other cloud-based services.
Though lacking a hard disk, this model instead has been shown to have 8 GB of flash storage for caching streamed content (source: EveryMac.com).
Unlike the OS X-based Apple TV that it replaced, the second-gen model features HDMI exclusively, instead of retaining the YPbPr component output that enabled connection to some older TV sets. Further, connection to a computer is no longer a requirement as was with the original model.
