History:
This model was announced in September '06 as part of a near-complete update of the entire Mac line (the Mac mini being the exception to this update as it only got a mild speed bump). While Apple heavily touted the Core2 as making Macs 64-bit for the second time in their history, hindsight from later years including teardown revealed that the CPU was only a fragment of a more complex equation; since Apple still used the 945GM logic platform that was designed for 32-bit Pentium 4 CPU's (it used this in early models) AND also used a 32-bit EFI ROM, the Late 2006 lines were a strange hybrid. It didn't help that the 945 logic platforms were found to bear an erratum whereupon 32-bit memory-mapped I/O (MMIO) always occupied space above 3 GB.
As a result of the strange brew, a number of scenarios play out:
- The system will boot OS X in 32-bit mode only
- OS X user space apps will run in 64-bit mode
- It is possible to install 4 GB of RAM, creating a dual-channel configuration as is recommended, but the MMIO bug caps the unit at 3 GB regardless.
- 64-bit Windows could run with Boot Camp, but is unsupported by Apple
- Lion is supported, but not Mountain Lion.
