Application launches if you go to System Preferences - Security and Privacy - and allow applications downloaded from: anywhere.

See http://perpetual-notion.blogspot.co.uk/2011/08/unetbootin-on-mac-os-x.html?m=1 to make it work. The second part, syslinux, is not required. It works without it.

If, when you boot the linux usb with a windows based machine, it gives the error "invalid or corrupt kernel image" then remember to check the md5 hashsum of the downloaded image before you run Unetbootin. Open terminal and type "md5 (filename)" and cross check the results with your linux distro website.
