1.6.4 Mountain Lion Release - free upgrade

1.4
Connected fine the first time but after the displays go to sleep it crashes upon trying to reconnect. only way to fix it is to restart the apps.

Trying to connect to a 10.6 computer used as a display from a primary PC running the latest Lion DP2 update causes the screen to flicker several times and give up. (A display box briefly appears on the 10.6 machine, and then disappears).

The Golden Master release of "Mountain Lion" OS X 10.8 (Build 12A269) moved the Air Display Drivers to a Folder called "Incompatible Software". This is for version 1.6.1 that is currently in the Mac App Store as of July 11, 2012. It appears that OS X 10.8 actively removes Air Display kext files making it completely incompatible. Haven't tried reinstalling the drivers to test after OS X 10.8 GM Installation.

Same problem with AirDisplay. Not surprising given the trouble I had with a "genius" last year who blamed a failed MBP on AirDisplay.

I recently upgraded to OSX10.8 on my early 2012 mac mini. I have been using AirDisplay as my screen.

I've run into an issue whereby the AirDisplay prefpane now turns itself off after 10-15 mins if its not being used. It also doesn`t activate on reboot.

This is obviously a problem as I don‘t have a monitor. I started to use logmein instead, but its not ideal as its mouse isn’t quite as usable (it works in the current release after many months of bugs and patchy performance).

I've been going back and forth with Avatron for a few weeks (they've been very supportive), and they proposed two solutions:

  • Uninstall / reinstall using a newly downloaded package
  • Delete the hidden com.avatron preference files

Neither has worked.

I also tried to write an applescript to select the menu app item "Turn Air Display On" , but I didn't really know what I was doing (here's my poor effort below). As I didn‘t get this working when the menu option was available, I didn’t proceed.

tell application "System Events"
set UI_Enabled to UI elements enabled
tell application process "AirDisplayStatusItem"
tell menu bar 1
tell menu bar item 1
click menu item "Turn Air Display On"
end tell
end tell
end tell
end tell

Has anyone else got an idea?

Thanks for the report. Of course, we are under NDA regarding Lion and cannot discuss any of our experience or findings with any prereleased software. But please be confident that we will make sure that Air Display works just fine with Lion when it goes live.

Cheers,
Dave at Avatron

Here when connection from a Lion DP2 (update 3?) laptop to a 10.6 machine, the display on the lion laptop will flicker several times, a box will appear on the 10.6 machine, and then it will apparently give up. (The status on the lion machine for Air Display will change to "off".) I can connect between two 10.6 machines on the same router just fine.

Tried to get it to work with Lion as well. No go. Same problem as Rob. I really need this to work. Is there any way you guys can release an update prior to Lion releasing? Twitterific for Mac already has Lion features so it can't be that Apple won't allow it.

We've updated our Mac drivers to version 1.4.2. The new version disables itself when installed on (1) Lion and (2) any Mac with a 9400M video adapter. Please see avatron.com/lion for more information.

The bottom line is that there's a bug in the Lion NVIDIA GeForce driver that is incompatible with any third-party video driver. We will issue another release to reenable the Air Display drivers as soon as Apple fixes its driver bug. We're exchanging emails “enthusiastically” with them now.

For the past few days, whenever I put my computer to sleep and woke it up, scrolling was extremely choppy on Safari and other apps. I uninstalled AirDisplay and things appear to be fixed.

Experienced a number of problems with my 2010 Macbook Pro since upgrading to Lion where the screensaver would start randomly or blank out entirely and 1Password would lock randomly and frequently. Disabling Air Display had no effect, but since uninstalling have had no further recurrences.

Well, Lion is out for a week already and the problem with Air Display in Mac Book pros is still there. The funny thing is that Apple sends you to the Avatron Site and Avatron blames Apple for a bug in the driver. Avatron site has very little information and has been closed for chat for many days. The support forums are useless. Please somebody fix this …

you can use DisplayPad by Clean Cut Code. It works like a charm.

I really cannot understand how can Air Display fail to work with Lion, when we are talking about an OS that has been out (either as a beta, or an official version) for nearly a year… The issue is very frustrating, and the people in RoaringApps do not come up with a solution in the next couple of days, then I will go ahead and buy DisplayPad that Ice proposed. Of course, if this happens, I will never want to hear about RoaringApps or any of its products again…

Word to the wise about DisplayPad. Air Display may not be working on my Lion machine but it didn't mess anything up. DisplayPad made Firefox a blank window for me. I had to uninstall DisplayPad to make Firefox work again.

Then I found on their site that they are having similar issues with certain video drivers on Lion.

We're all just gonna have to wait until Apple releases an update that fixes this.

All I can say is that Avatron is making excuses. There was ample time to beta test and deliver for their customers. This is a total cop-out and is frankly embarrassing that customers are left in a lurch.

Step up Avatron and stop making excuses. You have competitors after all …

Please fix that as soon as possible. Air Display used to aid me in a lot of my work and now my work is hampered because of this unfixed bug.

Is it a possibility that it might come support for connection via usb-cable in the future?
The network on my school doesn´t like my iPad:/

Also it would charge that way- unlimited use:):)

Air Display- wohoo:)

It's definitely an issue with Lion's 9400M drivers… NOT Avatron's fault… As proof, DisplayPad is having the exact same problem: http://cleancutcode.com/displaypad/lion.html

Just an FYI.

it works sometimes, but doesn't most of the times. Really frustrating. Hope they correct ect the bug. It's not money, it's time and a lot of time I am wasting.

Folks, we're doing everything we can to communicate the urgency of this to Apple, but to be honest, there's really nothing we can do to escalate the priority they assign to this bug.

If there were any kind of fix we could deploy to work around the issue we absolutely would have done so. But as others have noted, this issue affects not just Avatron's drivers, but ALL third-party video drivers. This includes DisplayLink, DisplayPad, iScreen, iDisplay, AirScreen, ScreenRecycler, and yes, Air Display.

Sorry I don't have better news about this.

But please realize that most Macs running Snow Leopard or Lion are compatible with the Air Display drivers. Those that are not are listed on our web site at http://avatron.com/lion

Best regards,
Dave at Avatron

Avatron, you should publish a free version (limited time) of your software if you are going to continue to be exposed to Apple problems like this. I wasted my money on your software — I bought it for my MacBook Pro and iPad and they have never worked together. If I was able to run a trial version first, then I would have discovered the easy way that your software does not work with my model of MacBook Pro.

Air Display, neither DisplayPad works…. except iDisplay… runs perfect and i have one of those cards with bug issues.. cum on guys we spent money expecting a useful app. go and figure something don't let the pack just to apple and claim that you been exchanging emails, ill keep with the hideous yellow icon of iDisplay. No bugs no excuses… just keep working straight.

I'm not mad yet, but I second the notion that Avatron guys need to work this out ASAP. People paid for the app and expect it to work. Worked great in leopard for me and I expect to continue using Air Display on Lion in the NEAR future.
