The Original Unreal Tournament at one point played flawlessly on Mac OS X, but it is dated and may have used some PPC code.

Ability to run on Lion and Mountain Lion, however, the Installer is the issue. Bypass that problem and it will work.

UT2004 will work on Lion/Mountain Lion. What it won't do is install. Epic should fix this. HOWEVER, there is a trick that does work here. If you can install UT2004 AND apply the 3369-2 patch on a Snow Leopard or earlier OS X, simply copy the Unreal Tournament 2004.app file (6.12GB) to an external drive and then copy into the Applications folder on 10.7 or 10.8. Make SURE you keep a couple of copies of that app file in safekeeping somewhere.

I'm running it on Mountain Lion 10.8 Retina Macbook Pro and it's BEAUTIFUL on it.

Game is PowerPC, support is dropped in 10.7 so it is safe to assume it isn't going to work in 10.8 either.

According to….
http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/u-z
Unreal Tournament (UT99) and UT2004 (w/ 3369.2 patch) work flawlessly on all Mac OS X releases up to 10.6.

Whether or not changes in Lion break what works in 10.6 is another question.

….Just visit my website. It'll solve your UT99 problems, at least.

UT2004 will work on Mac OSX 10.7…but there is a catch. You have to have the ut2004.app file copied to a backup drive froma 10.6 or earlier version. Copy/paste it to your OSX Lion Application folder and VOILA!, it will work.

Looks like the game is compatible, but the installer is not. This could be a hit for Epic if they would post it to the Mac App Store.

Is not working for me with Retina MBP and 10.8.1. I have a working copy running in Snow Leopard 10.6.7 patched to the latest 3369-2, but when I copy it to the retina running mountain lion 10.8.1 and try to start, I get the logo window and the a black screen, only way to recover is hard shutting down, although the system is working, because if I program a shutdown before (shutdown -r +2) the computer reboot normally after 2 minutes.

Any idea?

Lion (10.7) Comments

I believe this was originally an OS9 app with added OS X support, original installer used the OS9 emulator within OS 10.0/10.1 to install it.

Better OS X support was added later without the need for classic installation.

I can confirm this works on 10.3 and 10.4 (Dual G4 MDD), but not 10.5,10.6, or 10.7.

Can anyone confirm if it works on 10.5 or 10.6?
This may help detail its 10.7 compatibility.

Being able to play one of the all time classic 'Lan Party' games is a must.

according to http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/u-z

Unreal Tournament including UT99 (Original Unreal Tournament) and UT2004 (w/ 3369.2 patch) both work flawlessly on Mac OS X 10.6.

If that information is correct, Unreal Tournament should be supported on 10.0-10.6, possibly 10.7.

Depending on whether the app used any resources removed in 10.7 will we know if it indeed works in Lion.

If that website is correct, it works in every release up to and including Snow Leopard 10.6.

Neither UT nor UT2004 work in Lion (10.7). Both engines were based on the PowerPC processor, and Apple bridged that gap in 10.5 and 10.6 with a set of kernel extensions called Rosetta. Rosetta is unsupported in 10.7.

UT 2004 does not work on my Lion install. I get a window saying "You can't open Unreal Tournament 2004 because Power PC applications are no longer supported".

Call of Duty 2 brings up same message and does not work.

They both worked fine up to 10.6.8.

William is correct. It's just the installer which is PPC/Rosetta specific. Install the game on Snow Leopard or earlier, then just copy it over to your Lion drive. :)
