I was about to buy ABBYY FineReader Express as the trial worked just fine on Lion. I sent in an email about Mountain Lion compatibility and have not received a reply after 4 days.

My guess is to not trust spending the $$ just yet.

Vendor does not appear to have an update or firm plan to fix at this point:
"Thank you for contacting us.

I’m afraid, we cannot guarantee the compatibility of ABBYY FineReader Express Edition for Mac with Mac OS X 10.7 Lion (system specifications for the software can be found here: http://www.abbyy.com/finereader_for_mac/system_specifications/).

We do plan newer versions of FineReader for Mac. However, I do not think I can give you any time estimations of Lion OS support.

Please, feel free to contact us with any questions. We will be glad to assist you.

Yours sincerely,

Both FineReader and ReadIris being incompatible with Lion, what professional OCR would you people suggest me? I am trying OCRKit, which is fine, but not as good as FineReader was. Is there another professional OCR for Lion?

I got a more definite response from ABBYY after contacting them on July 25:

"Unfortunately, FineReader Express for MAC will not work on Mac OSx 10.7.

Our developers are aware of this issue and are working on a resolution. They will be releasing a new version of FineReader Express for MAC that will be compatible with Mac OSx 10.7 (unfortunately, there is no ETA, however it should be as soon as possible as this is extremely important for us).

Best Regards,
ABBYY USA Technical Support "

Version 8.1 is available in the App Store and has been for quite some time now. It's listed as compatible with Lion.

For some strange reason 8.1 hasn't been released on Abbyy's homepage yet, and it's not possible to upgrade an old installation to 8.1. Abbyy support still says that it's not ready, even when the new version is available on the App Store.

Has anyone bought 8.1 and tried it?

After harassing sales and tech support about it being compatible in the App store, but no patch on their site, I got a link tonight for an update I will try tomorrow.

ReadIris Pro has a Lion update I successfully used yesterday, too.

Received an email from ABBYY about new build 8.0.0.4123. Downloaded, installed, seems to work fine.
