The kernel panics in 1.6.0 were fixed in 1.6.1.

At July 14th developers made available the first version that should be working with OS X Lion: "Concurrent with the expected release of MacOS Lion, an initial version of OpenAFS is now available. More details are available on the MacOS page." Couldn't test it as I have no access to a Lion-installation.
