The QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component provides QuickTime users with the ability to import and play back MPEG-2 content, including both multiplexed (a.k.a. muxed, where the audio and video tracks are interleaved into one track) and nonmultiplexed (a.k.a. elementary) streams.

QuickTime 7 can be installed in Lion by using the Snow Leopard Installer disk's "optional applications." Then re-install the Apple MPEG-2 Playback codec.

I just downloaded it form the Apple Store, and It does not work at all!
I cannot install it. I called Apple, and they said that it's not compatible.
I got a refund from Apple.

First I installed QuickTime Player 7, I then tried to install QuickTime MPEG-2 for 7.6 but failed to install. Maybe the installer detects that the system is too new and refused. However if you use Pacifist and install the component in /Library/Quicktime/ now the plugin will work in QuickTime Player 7. Lion 10.7.1 tested.
