Caffeine is a tiny program that puts an icon in the right side of your menu bar. Click it to prevent your Mac from automatically going to sleep, dimming the screen or starting screen savers. Click it again to go back. Right-click (or ⌘-click) the icon to show the menu.

OSX Mountain Lion (ML) has an idle sleep policy that requires apps to set sleep assertions if they want to prevent sleep after the period set in Energy Saver. Caffeine is currently not compatible with the new policy.

It installs ok in ML, but in my experience (and that of others) it just does not do what it is intended to do, the Mac sleeps even with Caffeine on. This is because of the new sleep behaviour in ML. I hope the developers will be able to produce a working version using the new command 'caffeinate'. See the "help with caffeinate" thread in Apple's Mountain Lion discussions, snd other discussions.

When I have the latest version of Caffeine installed and active, my MBA goes to sleep when I close the lid. Is there something else that I have to do?
[ David]DavidAnonymous 11 Jun 2011 15:46
Caffeine does put the mac to sleep when the lid is closed. This has been this way since the app has been created, and happened on SL as well.

Doc. Caliban,
Caffeine only stops the Mac from going to sleep or dimming the screen automatically, like when you are watching a long Youtube video or something.

Doc. Caliban -
If you are looking for an app to keep your MacBook awake when you shut it, try InsomniaX.
