sudo SystemStarter restart CiscoVPN or any of the variations do not work.

Current version does not support x64 architecture

Thank you for the suggestion.

I read that this version of the client 4.9.01.0280 was supposed to fix this issue

http://www.techcare.com/blogs/jk-buzz/206-the-jk-buzz-31411.html

Apparently it did not because I am still getting the Error 51 message. Is there going to be a fix for this?

Cisco VPN Client is obsolete since MacOS X 10.6. The Cisco IPSec protocoll is supported in the Network:VPN Panel.

It hasn't been obsolete in 10.6 as the built-in VPN client doesn't support "Microsoft authentification" (even in 10.6.8 it is not possible to connect to Cisco ASAs configured to use MS authentification). However, the developer preview of 10.7 does a great job even with MS authentfication in Cisco VPN. So, finally, the cisco client is obsolete in 10.7.

Hello,

I have the following message: "Error 51: Unable to Communicate with the VPN subsystem …".

What should I do to fix this problem?

Thank you very much …

Jeremie.

Hello,

The only alternative I found is to use the VPN client software Shimo. Once installed, simply convert the profile of the "Cisco VPN" in profile "VPNC" and can connect to the VPN client Shimo. By cons, this software is not free. http://www.chungwasoft.com/shimo/

Do you know another free alternative? Or a Cisco solution for the customer?

thank you very much

Jeremie.

Free alternative = IPSecuritas. Lion compatible. Works with Juniper too.

Sorry, tflatley, i disagree on snow leopard. I am on 10.6.8. too (64 bit), Cisco VPN 4.9.01.0180 runs fine. Maybe you can grab a newer version somewhere?

ollie, Are you sure you are running 64 bit? I have never seen this work when booting to the 64 bit kernel.

I am able to get it to work by booting Lion in 32 bit mode by holding down the 3 & 2 when booting my machine. But this is not going to be a long term solution for me.

I did some packet captures, and I could observe that the native Cisco IPSec VPN of Snow Leopard only supports UDP, not TCP. In Snow Leopard, the only solution to connect to VPN termination device configured to use only TCP is the Cisco VPN Client.

I haven't testet it in Lion, and I won’t install Lion as long as I am not sure that the Cisco VPN Client is going to work on Lion.

In 99% of the cases, I have no influence whatsoever on the configuration of the VPN termination device (whatever it is), and if it is configured to do only IPSec over TCP, Lion is just unable to connect to it.

As I can read here, Microsoft authentication may also be a problem, although I didn’t encounter it yet.

a simple fix is to quit VPNClient, open a Terminal window, (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal) and type one of the following:

(for newer versions)
sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/CiscoVPN.kext

I have 10.6 yet and already have the problem sometimes.

Also running into this issue myself. I'm about to try restarting in 32-bit mode, but as with Chuck, this is not a long-term solution for me. I'm looking for a 64-bit method.
