Some themes cause Growl to not display alerts in 10.7. Many of the applications Growl can display pop-up statuses for do not have Lion-compatible plug-ins for Growl.

I am still running Growl 1.2.2 on Mountain Lion (not from the App Store) and it still works fine….

I tried every theme but none is displaying for me. I would change the status to not working since it's pretty much useless without notification (Lion DP4).

Actually, I take it back. I got it to work. After I installed Growl, it initially didn't work. I rebooted and it still didn't work at first. I was trying to get it to show Growl notifications from Alfred. To get it to work, I just closed Alfred, reopened, then went back to Growl prefs and made sure Alfred was in the applications list. Made sure Alfred had registered to use Growl. After that, stuff just worked. Most themes work, even installed a 3rd party one and it worked as well.

They say they are releasing a fully-compatible version in the App Store when Lion comes out publicly. Unfortunately, a lot of the features are being cut due to Apple's restrictions.

A correction to matthewmspace's saying - they didn't say "when Lion comes out publicly". They actually didn't mention any release date. MacStories assumed it'll be release within a few months after Lion's (public) release, which should happen this month (source: http://www.macstories.net/stories/growl-1-3-to-be-released-on-mac-app-store-introduce-lion-support-and-drop-growlmail-support/).

Im using spanish language, after installing Lion, now Growl are in Polish/Chech/Ruse.. think so.

a further correction to matthewmspace's comment:
in actuality no features are being cut from Growl, features are in fact being added (away notification rollup and entirely rewritten networking stack).
The parts of the distribution that are being discontinued are "Growl Extras" which are just like any other application that talks to Growl, just like Spotify or BBEdit or Adium. They have no special integration with Growl other than having been included with the distribution in the past. HardwareGrowler and GrowlTunes will be submitted to the Mac App Store, and GrowlMail will live on by way of my continued development of it.
